Vera Wang Spring 2013 Bridal Collection

22 Nov

Earlier this week we celebrated the launch of Vera Wang’s Spring 2013 Bridal Collection at their flagship Sydney store. This collection sees Vera embracing her Chinese heritage with the use of red, a popular choice for Chinese brides, symbolising love, good fortune and joy.

The stunning gowns in crimson, cardinal red, dahlia and scarlett are all available in ivory, so don’t be quick to dismiss the beautiful lines and structures you see below just because you wouldn’t wear a red wedding dress. My favourite? Katherine, directly below, is definitely on my gowns wish list – surprisingly light weight the dress moves delicately with the wearer and yes the fabric does sit as beautifully in real life as it does in this picture.

For Alana Patience, store manager of Vera Wang’s Sydney boutique, trying on your wedding dress is a total experience and she makes it her mission to make it an amazing one for every bride that walks in her door. She also challenges the misconception that a Vera Wang gown is out of reach for average Australian brides – prices start at $4000 which is more affordable than many people may think. If you’re interested in any of the gowns you see above or simply want to browse more of Vera Wang’s beautiful gowns schedule an appointment online.

Introducing Karen Willis Holmes 2013 Collection

29 Oct

It’s time to take a break from Monday… to think, imagine and dream about your perfect wedding dress. Luckily Karen Willis Holmes makes it easy for us with this dreamy shoot showcasing her latest collection. Dripping in timeless elegance these wedding gowns exude soft feminine beauty – something we have come to love about all Karen Willis Holmes gowns. We took this opportunity to ask Karen a little more about her stunning new collection…

What inspired this collection?

Our photo shoot features gowns from both the Demi Couture and BRIDE by KAREN WILLIS HOLMES Collections and draws inspiration from many different elements. A lot of the time I can be inspired when sourcing and viewing new fabrics, lace and motifs, and thinking about how I can work with the fabric.  I also love collating mood boards and inspiration images that mix from old world to modern day details.

What are the key aesthetics?

The key aesthetics of these collections is the fabrics and the way in which they have been used. We have cut out delicate corded lace motifs and hand stitched these as applique to necklines to soften the design on looks like the ‘Jasmine’ and ‘Matilda’ gowns. The silhouettes of the gowns are also very important to me – they are strong yet feminine.

What fabrics and embellishments have you used?

I have used a real mix of fabrics and textures – from a number of different types of lace varying from fine and delicate French Chantilly Lace, Corded Lace and beautiful Guipure Lace which have been immensely popular of late.

I have kept the embellished design elements minimal compared to the previous designs that will allow brides to create an individual look with the embellished belts and epaulettes we have available if they wish.

What kind of bride do you think this collection would suit?

I am very conscious of who my bride is and what she wants.  They want to look and feel beautiful on their wedding day. They are after a gown with exceptional fit, a gown they can personalize and make their own with accessories or small changes and they want a design which is both functional & fashionable.

Rhonda Hemmingway is an award-winning designer with 20 years experience creating ‘made to measure’ wedding dresses and evening gowns. She describes herself as an artist and is seen as a very authentic couturier in the wedding industry because of her ability to design, cut, assemble and sew a gown from beginning to end.

Rhonda Hemmingway

Rhonda’s passion for providing a genuine and personal service is experienced by every bride that walks through the doors of her boutique in Double Bay, Sydney. Some of her Australian celebrity clients have included Sandra Sully, Charli Delaney, Noni Hazelhurst and Susie Porter.

With all of her experience Rhonda has come up with some top tips for brides:

  • Your gown must be well cut, beautifully made and the perfect fit. If you have made the right choice (for you) then you will be seen as one of the most beautiful brides ever.
  • Don’t stress and don’t lose too much weight. Try really hard to not go too far as it doesn’t look like you anymore.
  • Rely on the people you have chosen to help you with your wedding. Tell your suppliers what you want and put your trust in them. Try really hard to relax!

Secrets and Confessions of a Wedding Dress Designer

Frock around Australia with Henry Roth

16 Aug

Media personality and bridal fashion designer, Henry Roth, is on his Australian roadshow right now and will be visiting Melbourne on Saturday 18th August and the Gold Coast on Saturday 25th August. Today he’s in Canberra.

As part of his roadshow Henry has been showcasing his latest bridal collection and having one-on-one consultations with some lucky Australian brides-to-be.

Henry Roth

Henry Roth

We were able to get some style tips and wedding advice from the funny and flamboyant Henry, when he popped in to see Sydney earlier this month.

What’s your top style tip for brides?

Don’t over-accessorise. Knowing when to start is as important as knowing when to stop as far as your styling goes.

What colours are ‘in’?

There is still a predominance of ivory, light ivory, diamond white or candlelight, nothing too creamy or yellow.  The use of blush in bridal seems to be coming in too.

What are your top five bridal trend tips for 2013?

  1. Hair: 1940s Greta Garbo styles – very tight and controlled waves or tousled up-dos
  2. Makeup: Natural is in!
  3. Gowns: It’s all about the vintage 21st century modern day princess
  4. Accessories: Go with one signature piece that is significant and dominant
  5. Work it your way! In 2013, more than any other year, it will be about your personal style and signature – if you love the gown that you are wearing that is all that matters

What do you love about what you do?

Weddings are a moment in people’s lives that is supercharged with excitement and challenges. The truth is I love diving into the middle of it!

If you missed out on seeing Henry for a consultation, he does have a boutique in Surry Hills (Sydney) and New York. His gowns can also be purchased from various retailers throughout Australia.

Vera Wang opens in Sydney

27 Jun

In case you missed out on the news modettes…

Vera Wang announced earlier this month the opening of her first Australian store – forget the 20 hour flight to New York, Vera Wang’s signature gowns are now available on Australian shores at the InterContinental Sydney. The Vera Wang brand, synonymous with luxurious, artistic and modern design and a long list of celebrity clientele has been creating stunning gowns since 1990. Sophisticated drama, feminine detailing and a modern approach are all part of her signature style. The stand-alone bridal boutique is by appointment only and Australian brides seeking a total experience will not be disappointed.

Here’s how Vera describes their latest collection:
The Spring/Summer 2012 Bridal Collection represents an ode to the Paris Opera, with inspiration taken from the works of French artist Edgar Degas and his depiction of young dancers floating about the stage. Key pieces from the collection include an elegant strapless natural-waist ballerina ballgown with veiled layers of dégradé floral laser-cut organza and detachable trapunto-stitched bustier, and a graceful strapless sweetheart soft mermaid gown with draped bodice of sunburst pleating and cascading fan back train. Vera Wang describes this Collection as “artful and adorable”.

Don’t just read about it – check out the backstage footage below.

You can now view the latest in wedding inspiration on Modern Wedding’s Youtube channel. Our editor in chief and I recently interviewed the fabulous designers featured in Luxury Weddings. They shared with us their tips, inspiration and advice while I got to try on one of their stunning gowns! Check out the Luxury Weddings interviews here.
