Wedding gift registries – get the RIGHT gifts listed!

7 Jun

My description of wedding fun= Choosing new goddies to fill your house with, spending someone elses money!

It’s now a widely accepted, even expected tradition, to pick out a list of pressies for your guests to choose from. It saves your guests a lot of time and angst over what to buy and with a registry list they can be assured that their presents won’t end up on ebay the following week!

The Wedding List Co. have given us their expert advice on how to make sure you don’t waste your Wedding Registry opportunity!

“A wedding registry should be one of the most fun parts of the wedding planning process. However, with so many gifts to choose from the experience can become a little overwhelming. So we have come up with our top tips to help you make some decisions about choosing your gifts and your registry.

Wedding Registry

Wedding List Co.

1. Try to select a wedding registry that offers an in-store and online buying options.
Online options are much more convenient for your guests to purchase gifts for you – particularly if they do not live near a store. In addition to an online buying facility it’s great to have the option for couples to set-up the registry online too and make amendments along the way.
Lastly it’s great to find a registry that offers more than just gifts (such as an invitation service), which will offer you something unique and the added convenience of multiple wedding planning services under the one roof.

2. Make sure your wedding registry contains a range of pieces that appeal to variety of budgets. Include some more affordable pieces but do not be deterred from selecting some expensive items either, as many people like to contribute to a combined gift with others guests if they feel it is something you would love.

Crystal Champagne flutes

3. Indulge in glassware –  Wine tastes so much better from a beautiful glass. And if it’s crystal…even better.
These days crystal does not have to be cut or overly designed, it can be simple and elegant like the Riedel Vinum range. Guests love to give stemware as a gift and it is usually one of the first things to be purchased off a registry. Certainly I have never seen Champagne Flutes left on a list unpurchased. I think it’s because every guest appreciates how nice it is to have lovely glasses for special occasions, and Champagne is always for special occasions so there will be memories around them.

Yellow cookware

4. Kitchenware is king in bridal registries at the moment.
Call it the Masterchef phenomenon but Good Cookware is on the top of couples list right now. Whether it’s some great quality pots and pans, or a good set of knives. Every couple will always have the basics, but if they enjoy cooking they will appreciate the difference a Swiss Diamond frypan and Wusthof Knife will make to the experience.

5. Make every night like a night in a luxurious hotel bed with premium bed linen.
Beautiful Egyptian quality sheets can make your marital bed feel 5-star. Our most popular is the brand new DwellStudio (the biggest selling textile range in the USA) that is stocked exclusively at Wedding List Co. We decided to stock this range after requests from die hard Aussie fans. You may remember the Sex and the City steamy bedroom scenes that were decorated by the DwellStudio range. With iconic graphic prints and bold colors, DwellStudio’s designs are this season’s must have bedroom accessory.

6. Choose something unique.
There will always be guests who would rather buy you something unique. They don’t want to be remembered for what they consider to be ho-hum homewares. For these guests you should have some fun and register something you may never otherwise buy yourself, and something you really lust after.”

Ten registry items that will save your marriage

30 Mar

Choosing whether to have a registry, wishing well, charity donations or nothing can be a real challenge and is fraught with worry over upsetting this person or that person… So it is best to cover your bases. Some people are more accustomed to giving cash in a wishing well than others. So for those guests, who you know will want to buy you a gift to treasure forever and will do so whether or not you have a registry set up, it’s best to give them a list of what you would really love, so you don’t end up with “lovely” items you put away… forever.

We have asked Wedding Gifts Direct to share their expertise with us on how to pick the PERFECT registry list.

“To begin with, make sure you set up your registry together. Many bridezillas may like to take the reins and add plenty of teaware and home furnishings, but the groom will also need to be comfortable and happy living in the home you have created. With an online wedding registry, you can both relax in the comfort of your home, while enjoying a glass of champagne (or beer!), choosing items together that will keep you both happy. A happy wife will still lead to a happy life, but setting up a registry should be a once-in-a-lifetime experience for the both of you.

Apple Ipad

1. An iPad

Keep yourselves organised on the go, listen to the music that calms you down when you are having a blue, or simply use google to find the solution to any marital problem you may be experiencing!

Coffee Machine

2. A Delonghi Icona Eco Espresso Coffee Machine

Well, pretty soon the wedding debt will kick in, and the household bills will keep on coming..make sure you don’t wake on the wrong side of the bed, and keep yourselves composed by starting each day with a morning latte. One little caffeine hit and your first fight about money will officially be postponed.

3.    A Tivo Digital Video Recorder

No need to fight over the remote control..record your favourite shows!

4.    Orson & Blake Marilyn Sofa

Cuddle up on your very own love seat..the perfect Friday night for any newlywed couple in small spaces. First fight about needing a bigger apartment aborted!

5.    Floriosa Luxury Scented Soy Wax Candles

You will find it strangely difficult to have heated arguments when you have an arresting sensual and heady white floral fragrance in the room to keep you both calm and relaxed.

6.    French Country Pair of Alphabet Bookends

You’ll be amazed at how pristine and chic your pile of clutter can look once it is pushed between this pair of stylish bookends! They’re quite pretty, but not so much so that he will object to having them in the house. A small gift that will mean no more nagging to get rid of that pile of bridal magazines that you can’t bring yourself to throw away just yet!

7.    An original piece of artwork

Choose a piece that you both love. It will be beneficial to both of you to have something to look at when you reach a point that you can’t handle looking at each other.

8.    KitchenAid Mixer

Let’s face it, the way the every man’s heart is through his stomach. Keep the love alive by surprising him with freshly baked cookies and scrumptious treats!

9.    Sheridan Millennia Bed Linen

Having a down week? There is nothing more comforting than the luxurious feel of 1200 thread count bedding to come home to after a long and tiring day.. a bit of sleep therapy cures all sins, and it’s obviously a lot cheaper than actual therapy.

10.  Board Games

You will never get bored when you have some fun games lying around to keep you occupied, and to keep each other’s minds sharp too. A little mystery and peacocking has never hurt any marriage.”

All your stationery Qs answered

28 Mar

When we asked our thriving Facebook community if they had any questions for our wedding expert panel, we were inundated with Stationery questions! There seems to be quite a few little etiquette details that are in question…. so we put it to the experts to finally get those niggling question marks clarified.

Firstly one bride asked, what exactly is needed for wedding stationery?

We had a fabulous answer from Sylvia at Ooh-Aah Invitations. She gave us the complete run down!

1. Pre Wedding:

  • Engagement Invitations
  • Save the date cards
  • Hens Party / Kitchen Tea party Invitations

    Kitchen Tea invite

2. The Actual Wedding Invitations which would include:

  • Envelopes
  • Any additional note card to be included in the invitation i.e. RSVP postcards, Wishing Well or Gift Registry Notice and or Direction/ Information cards for guests.

    Wedding stationery

    Wills Quills

3.On-the-day Stationery inclusive of:

  • Guest place cards
  • Order of Service booklets
  • Bomboniere tags
  • Table Numbers
  • Thank you for attending notes
  • Guest books
  • Signage boards
  • Table seating charts.

4.Post-Wedding stationery:

  • Custom design thank you cards. Some couples have even requested custom designed letterhead stationery for use after the wedding.

Robyn asked us “How many weeks before the wedding should I send out invites? At 8 months to go now I am preparing save the date cards.”

Tina from Paper Lily shares her expertise on the subject: “Generally speaking, invitations should be sent out around 8-10 weeks before the wedding with an RSVP date of approximately 4 weeks before the wedding to give you ample time to arrange the seating, place cards etc. If you have sent save the date cards then you can send the invitations out a little later. If there were no save the date cards then it would be ok to send the invitations up to 3 months before the wedding.”

Emma asks about the timing when it comes to sending out invitations to overseas guests.
Sylivia from Ooh Ahh Invitations offers her advice, “With weddings that have a large number of international guests its best to get the invitations out as soon as possible. This allows for guests to purchase tickets from an earlier date as we all know the later you book, the higher price you pay. If the finer details such as ceremony start times and reception times have not be confirmed its best to send out save the date cards to ensure guests are aware of when the nuptials are to take place.”

Finally a question that many brides are concerned about! Meagan writes “I am so worried about asking my guests to contribute to our wishing well after I’ve already asked them to travel so far for the big day. Do you have any suggestions?”

Tina from Paper Lily suggests, “No matter how far your guests have travelled, they will more than likely still want to give you some kind of gift. There are many lovely wishing well poems out there that take the attention away from the money aspect and focus on thanking your guests for sharing your special day and contributing to the wishing well if they want to. You could also make it more personal by requesting that they include some words of wisdom on married life or a special message for you.”

A big thanks to Paper Lily and Ooh-Aah Invitations for your wonderful expert advice on these matters. And for any brides out there who have more questions on stationery please leave them in the comments section below and we will put them to our experts and get back to you!

A Gift Registry with Taste AND a Kitchen Tea? I DO!

14 Mar

Sometimes our style is very different to our guests and that is why we have gift registries in the first place, but if you’re looking to fill your home with sophisticated European design then look no further than Taste Living.

Taste Living is an Australian lifestyle brand boasting an exclusive range of European products for all areas of the home, from kitchens, bathrooms, bedrooms, dining and living areas. The company has launched a new Gift & Bridal Registry, which they say is ‘a fresh take on the traditional gift registry.’ Brides can choose from a collection of over 4,000 European products with the help of an on-hand designer for advice at every step of the way.

This is the part that excites the girly girl in me…

When you register with Taste you can get more than just beautiful designer gifts. At a time when the ‘to do’ list seems never ending Taste is offering a free kitchen tea to two brides who register with Taste each month. Host up to 20 guests in one of Taste’s state-of-the-art Sydney showrooms that feature a café and dining area plus fully functional world-class kitchen. Taste’s chef will demonstrate decadent recipes while you sip champagne and nibble on canapés. To end the perfect afternoon the bride and her guests will receive a goodie-bag containing free gifts and a voucher to spend at Taste.

Gorgeous designer wedding gifts AND a kitchen tea? I’m sold! Visit a Taste Living showroom or browse through their extensive range online. The hardest part is deciding on which gifts to choose!

Will you be having a gift registry? Can you risk NOT having one? Let us know your thoughts on our Facebook!

A Grand Gift Registry

16 Jun

She may well be the princess of pop culture at the moment, but it appears Kim Kardashian doesn’t have everything! She and fiance Kris Humphries have just selected an extravagant gift registry from Geary’s Beverly Hills.

Images courtesy People Magazine

Valued at over $180,000 the registry includes big ticket items like:

Baccarat Cosmos Extra Large Vase – $7,850.00

Lalique Black Orchid Vase – $4,395.00

Baccarat Equinoxe Round Whiskey Decanter – $680.00

Lalique Soudan Black Ashtray – $1,100.00

Wow! A thousand dollar ashtray? They’ve also registered for Hermes Dinnerware, Baccarat Crystal, Cristofle and Buccelatti Silverware! How luxurious! Check out the full registry here. We’re wondering if she and Kris are going to consider making a charitable donation or asking their guests to donate rather than just asking for lots of expensive gifts! We’d like to recommend the National Breast Cancer Foundation 😉

The date of their wedding is also listed as Monday 31st October – that’s Halloween! Vampy wedding theme anyone? What would you do if you had an endless gift registry budget? Or an endless wedding budget? Leave your comments below, stop by Facebook or Tweet Us @ModernWeddingOz.
